Before the event

Having got back into Heathrow at around 07.00 this morning from Brazil, I went home to change, then into the office, then (after a debriefing on the Breakthrough Capitalism Forum, see 29 May entry) with Jamie Arbib and Kelly Clark of Tellus Mater, I caught a train from Euston to Birmingham.

There I walked in the rain to the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, where I spoke during the dinner to participants in an Applied Industrial Symbiosis conference organised by International Synergies. Had to concoct a lectern out of a table, a plastic crate and a tablecloth, with the help of the sound man, Warren, because neither of the computers had a remote mouse. Have to confess that I rather dread speaking during large meals, but even though many people had just sat down with their plates, you could genuinely have heard a pin drop. (And if that's a split infinitive, it's too late in the day to care.)

I then caught the 21.33 train back to Euston, which stopped at over 20 stations, and got me back into London at 00.20. Glad I don't do this everyday, but well worth the trip. And very much enjoyed reading Daniel Gilbert's Stumbling on Happiness as I travelled.
